Kindergarten Overview
Reader's Workshop Overview
Reader's Workshop is split apart into different segments in which we introduce and practice skills to
help your child develop his or her reading skills.
Morning Meeting - A shared message in which we practice print concepts.
Shared Reading - We will read a focus text that will focus on a comprehension strategy.
Guided and Independent Reading - We will work together with students to practice reading skills that they will apply when they read a book on their own.
Phonics and Spelling - The first half of the year we focus on the alphabet and phonological awareness. The second half of the year we move on to spelling strategies to help the children decode and encode unfamiliar words.
Writer's Workshop Overview
Writer's workshop is broken out into different components that is integrated throughout the week.
Journal Writing - Most mornings we start our day with writing in our journal. We will have a sentence prompt up on the board that the students copy and finish the sentence. Journals are an amazing resource that helps us practice print concepts as well as blending and segmenting words. We will use your child's journal to conduct a writing conference that will last 1-2 minutes and will cover a specific skill.
Guided Writing - We incorporate interactive writing into other content areas. During these lessons the teacher will work with the class to write a sentence. During these lessons, we focus on writing strategies such as blending and segmenting as well as a variety of print concepts.
Thematic Writing - At least once a week we will introduce a thematic topic and integrate an interactive writing and drawing lesson.
Directed Drawing - Drawing and coloring skills are crucial to being able to tell a story. Once a week we will complete a directed drawing that is related to what we are covering in class. This also helps your child strengthen his or her fine motor skills.
Math Workshop Overview
Our Math Workshop is broken into the following components...
Daily Calendar - Each morning we complete our daily calendar routines which include today's date, days of school, place value street. Each month we will focus on basic skills such as number sense and time awareness. Some months may see a new skill integrated that will review what is being taught in math class.
Guided Math - The children will receive an explicit math lesson focusing on one of our math topics from our curriculum. We use the guided release model in helping the children develop their math skills - I do, we do, you do. The curriculum we use incorporates each of these steps as we work on practicing our math skills together as a class.
Math tubs - Math manipulatives are provided at various math stations that the children rotate through with their learning partners. This allows the children a hands on experience while practicing math concepts such as counting, sorting, graphing, patterns, and more. Some days include free exploration days in which the children are encouraged to create using any of the their favorite math skills.
Theme Time Overview
Theme Time consists of Science, Social Studies, and Health.
Topics are taught thematically and integrated in various parts of the day.
Reader's Workshop - We will have teacher read alouds in which we read non fiction and fiction books on our topic.
Writer's Workshop - We integrate writing by having the children write or draw about what they have learned about the topic.
